Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA
Compared with the typical (middle) count of 220 complaints across the 6 model-year 2012 half-ton trucks we cover. Best-selling trucks naturally collect more complaints because more of them are on the road.
Price & value
We don't guess at prices. Get a real value for the exact truck from Kelley Blue Book, then see how the asking price compares.
Is it a good deal?
- Look up the truck on Kelley Blue Book. Choose its cab, trim, options, miles, condition and your ZIP code, and note the private party value (or the fair purchase price if you're buying from a dealer).
- Enter that value and the asking price below.
Enter both numbers to see the deal rating.
The rating only compares the two numbers you enter: within 5% of the value is a good deal, 5–15% under is a great deal, and more than 15% under is a buy-it-now price. Know Your Truck isn't affiliated with Kelley Blue Book. Rust, accident history, lifts and mods, and service records all change what a truck is worth, so always get a pre-purchase inspection.
Owner's manual
Get the free official owner's manual from GMC's manuals and guides page. Choose 2012 Sierra 1500. It covers maintenance schedules, fluids, towing limits and warning lights. Older years may not be listed online.
Recalls
A recall doesn't mean a truck still has the problem. Enter the truck's VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or ask a dealer to see whether the repair was done.

The contact owns a 2013 GMC Sierra. The contact stated that while driving at 70 MPH, she lost consciousness. After regaining consciousness, the contact discovered that the vehicle had crashed into two vehicles and that the driver's side air bag had deployed. The police and paramedics arrived at the scene; however, no one involved in the accident needed immediate medical assistance. A police report was filed. About a week after the accident, the contact stated that they began to develop open sores on both arms as black metal fragments began to leak out of these sores. The contact went to the doctor and was treated for the injuries and was referred to a dermatologist for further assistance. Upon investigation, the contact linked her injuries to the Takata air bag recall. The vehicle was towed to the contact's home and an independent mechanic was able to repair certain parts of the vehicle to make it drivable. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a claim was filed. The contact was also informed that an inspector would be sent to inspect the vehicle. The vehicle had been repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 312,000.

They should be responsible for repairs or replacement of the cheap made frames that rust away so fast so u ain’t gotta worry about your truck fallling apart going down the rd and the lower control arms made of cast that rust from inside out and you don’t know until breaks while driving along with camber adjustments where they can throw alignment out with a single bump. Mostly the frame replacement is major always having to plate frame or check to make sure it will be able travel long trips or haul stuff in bed or a trailer with breaking or falling off truck causing wreck frame repair is major and time consuming if you don’t have proper stuff and definitely expensive and lower control arms that’ll make a wheel come real fast and it’s time consuming and expensive too but very dangerous and breaks and causes damage right then and there at high or low speed on highways or interstates

I went to get the vehicle inspected today and was told it failed due to the chassis frame in the rear being rusted thru. This could cause the suspension to collapse any time. I see on the internet that multiple others have and are experiencing the same with the Sierra and Silverado. My vehicle has unlimited washes and has been washed 40 times a year and looks new from the outside.

I took My 2012 GMC Sierra with 112,410 miles in for annual safety inspection and was told that my frame has a hole in it and is cracked, hence un-inspectable in the state of Vermont. I then took it to a welding shop to get an estimate on repair and the tech told me he sees this all the time on this era GM/Chevy trucks. This is clearly a widespread incident and GM should be held accountable like Toyota was years ago with its bad frames.O

Vehicle has just over 113,000 miles and the frame is already severely compromised due to rust. Nearly all factory coating is gone. I believe the sub par wax like coating that GM used from the factory was never intended to last anywhere near or over 100,000 miles. I have personally inspected numerous 2007-2013 GMT900 trucks in or around ohio and have found similar severe rust issues. All vehicles inspected were between 60,000 and 120,000 miles. The rust issues are the worst in the areas directly in front of the rear axle where the frame drops. Nearly every vehicle inspected has structure compromising rust in this area. GMT900 platform vehicles with rust issues in this area are unsafe to be on the road, yet they remain popular in multiple service industries and are frequently seen pulling trailers. GM has done a great disservice to their customers by using a sub par coating on the most important structural component in a vehicle. These trucks should easily last well over 250,000 miles but due to poor coatings they have a hard time breaking 100,000 miles.

June 29, 2025, Driving on the St. Francis loop in Amarillo, TX, brake lights start flashing, the warning sounds happening, no brakes. I had already slowed down to 35-45 mph due to road construction ahead. I weaved through the cones and as soon as possible, hit the ditch and then coasted to a stop. (I didn’t think about the emergency brake, in my panic.) I turned the vehicle off and called my husband. I decided that I wasn’t pulled over far enough over in the ditch, so I started the pickup again. The lights and warning signals for the brakes were gone and when I pressed on the brake pedal, there were brakes again. I drove home at 35 mph, knowing I could use the emergency brake at that speed, if needed, and had brakes all the way home. GMC Bender repaired truck. After driving approximately 3 miles since repaired, our daughter took the truck to Grease Monkey. She was at the garage door; employee said the pickup didn't need an oil change. She backed out and didn’t have brakes (no warning lights or sounds) and as the truck continued backing, it hit the Grease Monkey sign at the east end of their lot and broke it, knocked the sign over. An employee walked over to see what happened, she told him that she didn’t have brakes. He sat in the pickup seat and pushed on the brakes and said, yes, you don’t have brakes! The police were called, and the officer who showed up took pictures, gave us his card, talked with my husband and talked to the Grease Monkey boss. August 6, 2025, I called GMC Bender Service Department (11 mins. 8 secs.) I told them what had happened. They sent a tow truck to bring the pickup back to their shop. September 16, 2025, my husband texted me saying GMC Bender said that the pickup shows another EBS Modulator Fault. No new parts… used one would be $1293 installed. A week to get it here, no guarantees. There's more details, but the vehicle cannot be repaired to guarantee brakes will work properly. Please help us know what to do next.

Lifter Failure: I was traveling to a State Park in Northern Michigan when my engine starting running very rough with major power loss. My check engine light activated, and I pulled over as soon as I could. It was dangerous because I was pulling a camper and I had to drive well under the speed limit. The Certified Chevy Dealership discovered a collapsed lifter and Cam damage. They considered this as catastrophic engine failure, and I was completely shocked as the vehicle had roughly 129k miles on it. There was no indication of failure prior to this incident as the vehicle ran perfect. I am very disappointed in GM as I have a co-worker with the same year truck that had the exact same issue shortly after I did. A friend of mine also had this happen with a 2014 vehicle of same make and model. It appears that this is a common issue with GM's newer 5.3 engines which used to be extremely reliable (99-07). GM needs to fix these lifter issues because a newer technology engine should last much longer.

I HAVE GOODYEAR WRANGLER SR-A 265 60R20 TIRES ON MY SIERRA DENALI HD 2500. I WAS ON THE WAY BACK FROM NC VIA I-95 AND PULLED OVER SO MY WIFE COULD NURSE OUR 3 WEEK OLD. ME AND THE BOYS WENT IN K-MART FOR A FEW MINUTES. UPON RETURNING AND GETTING BACK ON THE ROAD, I NOTICED MY CAR WAS PULLING BAD RIGHT AND THE STEERING WHEEL WAS SHAKING VERY BADLY. I MANAGED TO DRIVE IT THE ADDITIONAL 30 MILES BACK HOME. WHEN I STARTED THE TRUCK THE NEXT MORNING, THE STEERING WHEEL SHAKE WAS TOO BAD TO CONTINUE ANYWHERE BUT THE DEALERSHIP. I DROVE TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID THAT THE TIRES WOULD BE COVERED UNDER MY EXISTING "BUMPER TO BUMPER" WARRANTY AS THE DEALERSHIP NOTICED THAT THERE WAS A HUGE BULGE IN THE TIRE WHICH WAS CAUSING ALL OF THE COMMOTION. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION, IT WAS NOTED THAT THE FRONT RIGHT TIRE ALSO HAD BULGES, THESE IN THE SIDEWALL WHERE THE TIRE MEETS THE RIM. THE DOT BATCH NUMBER IS #PJ6KA5IV 32/11 AND BOTH TIRES WERE FROM THE SAME BATCH. I WAS DRIVING AROUND WITH TWO DEFECTIVE TIRES!!!!!!! WITH MY 8 YEAR SON, 4 YEAR OLD SON, 3 WEEK OLD DAUGHTER AND MY WIFE. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE! OUR LIVES WERE AT RISK! IMAGINE MY SURPRISE WHEN THE DEALERSHIP CALLED THE FOLLOWING MORNING AND SAID THAT GM HAD "CHANGED THEIR POLICIES AND THEY WOULD ONLY BE GIVING ME A 30% DISCOUNT." I UNDERSTAND POLICY BUT THESE TIRES ONLY MEASURED LITTLE WEAR AND SHOULD HAVE AT LEAST 55% MORE TREAD LIFE BASED ON THE EXACT TIRE MEASUREMENTS. INSTEAD, GM IS USING A SLIDING SCALE FOR MILEAGE THAT DOES NOT TAKE ACTUAL MEASUREMENTS INTO THEIR ASSESSMENT. SO NOW, I AM OUT $350 FOR 2 NEW TIRES THAT SHOULD HAVE LASTED A WHOLE LOT LONGER AND NO HELP FROM GOODYEAR OR GMC. *TR

The contact owns a 2012 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the transmission unexpectedly downshifted, especially between second and third gears. The check engine warning light was intermittently illuminated. In addition, the contact stated that the engine felt as though the engine mounts were inoperable. The contact pulled over to the side of the road and turned off the vehicle. The vehicle was restarted, and the vehicle resumed normal driving. The vehicle was taken to the dealer; however, no cause for the failure was found. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the failure persisted. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was approximately 20,000.

I WANTED A SECOND OPINION BECAUSE I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF A FLYWHEEL GOING BAD IN MY LIFE. AFTER SPEAKING WITH A FEW MECHANICS WE ALL AGREED THAT IT WAS NOT THE FLYWHEEL. ON 4APR I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO ANOTHER DEALER WHO CONFIRMED THAT THE TICKING WAS THE FLYWHEEL. THE FLYWHEEL HAD TO HAVE BEEN DEFECTIVE AT TIME OF MANUFACTURING. IT JUST CRACKED FOR NO GOOD REASON OTHER THAN IT WAS POORLY MADE. 2012 GMC SIERRA 1500 FLYWHEEL JUST CRACKED OUT OF NOWHERE ENDANGERING THE LIVES OF AN ENTIRE FAMILY AND WHO KNOWS WHO ELSE IF IT HAD SHATTERED.THE VEHICLE WAS TICKING AFTER A MORNING START WHILE SITTING IDLE.

I PURCHASED A 2012 GMC SIERRA DENALI FROM STAHL MOTORS IN MONTEREY, CA IN FEBRUARY OF 2015. THEY ARE NOT WILLING TO PAY FOR THE DAMAGES TO MY TRUCK EVEN THOUGH THEY SOLD ME A COMPLETELY DANGEROUS VEHICLE, WHICH I WILL EXPLAIN. MY TRUCK DIDN'T FEEL RIGHT AS I WAS DRIVING SO I DECIDED TO TAKE IT TO A SHOP TO GET LOOKED AT. THERE IS A LONG LIST OF THINGS THAT IS WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE, BUT I WILL MENTION JUST THE MAIN ONES. THE TRUCK WAS SOLD TO ME WITHOUT THE REAR BRAKES HOOKED UP. THE BRAKE LINES FOR THE REAR CALIPERS WERE CAPPED OFF BY THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL. WHEN THE MECHANIC [name removed] THAT, THEY ALSO DISCOVERED THE MASTER CYLINDER WAS COMPLETELY DRY, WHICH CAUSED DAMAGE TO MY FRONT BRAKES. THERE WAS NO CROSS MEMBER UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE FROM FRAME TO FRAME. IT WAS TORCHED OUT, THEREFOR LEAVING ZERO SUPPORT FOR THE FRAME OF THE TRUCK AS WELL AS THE FRONT DIFFERENTIAL. WHICH NEEDED TO BE REBUILT CAUSED FROM EXCESSIVE MOVEMENT LEFT TO RIGHT. FRONT DIFFERENTIAL NEEDED TO BE REBUILT CAUSED FROM THE DAMAGE OF NO CROSS MEMBER IN PLACE. BALL JOINTS WERE ALSO AFFECTED (ABOUT TO POP OUT OF CONTROL ARMS) DUE TO WRONG PARTS INSTALLED IN FRONT SUSPENSION OF VEHICLE.

Services performed at dealership or certified shop. Troubleshooting was performed, Im told. I cant vouch for the quality of the workmanship. This should not be an issue at this mileage 100,100 ohe hundred thousand miles and oil components going bad is not good. GMC has sold me a truck that needs a new engine component. Please help. I WAS DRIVING MY TRUCK UP A 6% PERCENT GRADE WHEN THE CHANGE FUEL FILTER SOON WARNING POPPED UP, ABOUT A MINUTE LATER THE VEHICLE STARTED TO LOSE POWER, I KEPT DRIVING TO TRY AND GET OVER THE HILL SO I COULD MAKE IT TO A REPAIR SHOP TO HAVE IT CHECKED OUT. I WAS ONLY ABLE TO MAKE IT ABOUT 2 MILES AFTER THE WARNING SHOWED UP BEFORE THE VEHICLE COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN AND WOULD NOT RESTART. (THERE WAS NOT ENOUGH ROOM ON THE SHOULDER TO PULL OVER ON MY SIDE THE ROAD SO I TRIED TO TURN ACROSS THE HIGHWAY WHERE THERE WAS AN EMERGENCY PULL OUT AND AS I DID THE TRUCK DIED SIDEWAYS RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY, TAKING UP SEVERAL LANES OF TRAFFIC, FORTUNATELY THERE WAS ENOUGH INCLINE THAT I WAS ABLE TO ROLL BACKWARDS AND PULL OVER UP AGAINST THE GUARDRAIL) OF COURSE I HAD NO POWER STEERING OR POWER BRAKES SINCE THE TRUCK WAS NOT RUNNING. IT WAS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION! I WAS ABLE TO GET MY TRUCK TOWED TO THE LOCAL GM REPAIR SHOP WHERE THEY DETERMINED THAT THE FUEL PUMP HAD A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE AND HAD SENT ALUMINUM SHAVINGS THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM. THEY SAID THE REPAIRS WOULD BE APPROXIMATELY $10,000 SO I CONTACTED GM AND DESCRIBED WHAT HAPPENED, AND THEY BASICALLY TOLD ME TO GO FLY A KITE. AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH ONLINE IT LOOKS LIKE THERE HAS BEEN A MAJOR PROBLEM WITH GM TRUCKS WITH THE DURAMAX MOTOR FROM 2011-2016 AFTER THEY CHANGED THERE FUEL PUMP FROM THE CP3 HIGH VOLUME LOW PRESSURE PUMP TO THE CP4 HIGH PRESSURE LOW VOLUME PUMP. WHICH MEANS THE PUMP RUNS WITH LESS LUBRICATION WHICH RESULTS IN PUMP FAILURE, AND NOT JUST FAILURE BUT CATASTROPHIC FAILURE WHICH CAUSES MAJOR DAMAGE TO THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM. I HAVE BEEN A LOYAL GM OWNER FOR OVER TWENTY YEARS, AND I AM EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED THAT GM IS NOT WILLING TO MAKE IT RIGHT.

MY MECHANIC STATED HE HAS REPAIRED SEVERAL OF THESE ISSUES ON OTHER GMC'S. THE PROBLEM IS THE TOP OF THE FUEL TANK IS RUSTED WHERE THE FUEL PUMP IS LOCATED AND GAS SPRAYS UPWARDS ONTO THE BOTTOM SIDE OF THE BED AND IS VERY COSTLY AND DIFFICULT TO REPAIR. I'M SURE GM IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM, HOWEVER, THEY HAVE CHOSEN TO IGNORE THE ISSUE. THIS IS MOST DEFINITELY A SAFETY ISSUE!

AS I PRESSED DOWN ON BRAKE TO STOP, THE VEHICLE CONTINUED AS IF THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM SLIPPED, CAUSING THE TRUCK TO DRIVE FORWARD CRASHING THROUGH THE SHEETROCK WALL AND FINALLY STOPPING AFTER HITTING THE GLASS WINDOWS. TWO WEEKS LATER, AFTER ALL COSMETIC REPAIRS WERE DONE, THE VEHICLE DID THE SAME THING IN ANOTHER PARKING LOT, BUT LUCKILY BROKE BEFORE HITTING THE CURB AND LIGHT POST. APPARENTLY GM USES PEANUT OIL TO LUBRICATE WIRING SO THEY CAN MORE EASILY INSULATE, ETC (ACCORGING TO THE GM DEALER). THIS ATTRACTS RATS AND MICE WHICH CHEW UP THE WIRING - POTENTIALLY IMPACTING SENSORS AND OTHER ITEMS CONTROLLING CRUISE, STABILITY/TRACTION CONTROL, AND ANY NUMBER OF ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS THAT THE DRIVER MAY BE RELYING UPON FOR SAFETY. I ACTUALLY HAD MAP SENSOR WIRES CHEWED UP THAT DISABLED MY STABILITY/TRACTION SYSTEMS AND INHIBITED ENGINE PERFORMANCE. LUCKILY FOR ME IT HAPPENED IN MY DRIVEWAY RATHER THAN ON THE HIGHWAY. DEALER CLAIMS IT IS NOT WARRANTY ITEM EVEN THOUGH CAUSED BY A PROCESS THAT GM ELECTS TO USE IN BUILDING THE VEHICLE. THIS COULD IMPACT ANY/EVERY VEHICLE THAT GM BUILDS WITH USE OF PEANUT OIL (MAY INDEED BE ALL OF THEIR MODELS). *TR

PURCHASE A NEW 2012 GMC SIERRA SLE ON 07/26/12. AS I LEAVE FOR WORK IN THE EARLY HOURS, IT REQUIRES THAT I USE THE DEFOG/DEFROST. ON THE MORNING OF THE 28TH I SELECTED THE DEFOG/DEFROST AND ONLY THE DRIVER'S SIDE CLEARED. THINKING IT MAY BE ISOLATED, I RECEIVED THE SAME RESULT ON THE 29TH. I CALLED THE SELLING DEALER ABOUT ANOTHER MATTER AND MENTIONED THIS PROBLEM. ON AUGUST 9TH THE TRUCK WAS TAKEN FOR SERVICE AND TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE. WAS TOLD THAT IT IS OPERATING AS NORMAL AND THE DEALER TESTED TWO OTHER NEW TRUCKS. STILL NOT HAPPY WITH THE ANSWER, I CALLED GMC. THEY SETUP SERVICE AT ANOTHER DEALERSHIP FOR THE 16TH. AGAIN, NO PROBLEMS COULD BE FOUND PER THEIR TESTING, BUT WERE GOING TO CHANGE THE DUCT AS THE AIR FLOW WAS MUCH GREATER TO THE DRIVER'S SIDE. WHEN THE DUCT CAME IN, THEY OPTED NOT TO CHANGE IT, AS IT REQUIRES TO STRIP THE DASH TO THE WINDSHIELD. ALL THIS TIME GMC WAS UPDATED OF THE PROGRESS. THE SYSTEM DOESN'T CLEAR THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE WINDSHIELD AND PASSENGER DOOR WINDOW. GMC STAND IS, THAT ENGINEERING DESIGN THE SYSTEM THIS WAY TO CLEAR THE DRIVER'S SIDE QUICKER DURING POOR WEATHER, AS LIKE SNOW AND ICE. MY STAND IS THAT THIS IS NOT A PROPER ANSWER FOR A VEHICLE MAKER TO STATE. THIS ISSUE MAKES THE VEHICLE UNSAFE TO OPERATE AND I DO NOT LIVE WITHIN AN AREA SEEING THIS TYPE OF WEATHER OFTEN. I HAVE READ MANY INTERNET ARTICLES RELATED TO THIS. OTHER OWNERS TRUCKS OPERATE PROPERLY CLEARING BOTH SIDES OR HAVE HAD THEM PROPERLY REPAIRED IF THEY HAVE HAD THE SAME ISSUE.

*TR
