Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA
Compared with the typical (middle) count of 502 complaints across the 6 model-year 2011 half-ton trucks we cover. Best-selling trucks naturally collect more complaints because more of them are on the road.
Price & value
We don't guess at prices. Get a real value for the exact truck from Kelley Blue Book, then see how the asking price compares.
Is it a good deal?
- Look up the truck on Kelley Blue Book. Choose its cab, trim, options, miles, condition and your ZIP code, and note the private party value (or the fair purchase price if you're buying from a dealer).
- Enter that value and the asking price below.
Enter both numbers to see the deal rating.
The rating only compares the two numbers you enter: within 5% of the value is a good deal, 5–15% under is a great deal, and more than 15% under is a buy-it-now price. Know Your Truck isn't affiliated with Kelley Blue Book. Rust, accident history, lifts and mods, and service records all change what a truck is worth, so always get a pre-purchase inspection.
Owner's manual
Get the free official owner's manual from GMC's manuals and guides page. Choose 2011 Sierra 1500. It covers maintenance schedules, fluids, towing limits and warning lights. Older years may not be listed online.
Recalls
A recall doesn't mean a truck still has the problem. Enter the truck's VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or ask a dealer to see whether the repair was done.

This is not a safety item, but one that causes undue financial hardship for the owner. It is widely know that the dash on certain 2007-2014 GM vehicles (generally trucks and SUV's) is susceptible to cracking. This causes devaluation of the vehicle if not fixed and is reported to cost between $2,000-2,500 to repair. It is my opinion that the cause of this is the use of substandard parts by GM and they should issue a recall for the repair of the dash.

It's very unsafe, last time it it did it I was on the freeway and had to pull to the side, but the car has no acceleration so vehicles are passing me by at 75- 80mph and I almost had a very bad accident.

My GMC which is well cared for and only has 121,000 miles has a rusted through frame (mid-vehicle, left side) which has made the truck unsafe to drive. The steel used is inferior, my neighbor across the street also has this truck, 2 years newer, and is doing the same thing. As I have researched this issue I have found out that this is a critical failure of the GMC Sierra for several model years due to a failure to protect the steel used in northern states which compromises structural integrity. When Toyota had this issue, they stepped up and replaced the frames. General Motors, please tell me what you intend to do with this. It is a 5.3 Litre with 121,000 miles on it, in other words, still a baby for such a fine engine. This is not right. I am seriously discouraged. For my family, this is devastating. I still owe $2000 on this vehicle. Thank you, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Vehicle experienced a catastrophic mechanical failure characterized by a percussive "shotgun blast" noise from the rear chassis, followed by an immediate, total loss of braking power (pedal to the floor) and a violent loss of directional stability. This incident represents an aggravated safety failure of known GMT900 platform defects. The technical chain of causality began with the factory exhaust manifold fasteners suffering a metallurgical shear, a universal defect documented under GM Bulletins 19-NA-218, PIP5075, and PIP4701. This shear created a high-velocity, high-heat exhaust leak directed at the brake master cylinder and vacuum assembly. This "heat soak" event compromised the engine-mounted mechanical Brake Vacuum Pump (Recall N192268490 / NHTSA 19V645) and destroyed the internal seals of the Master Cylinder (Special Coverage 15143 / NHTSA 11V599), resulting in total depletion of vacuum assist and hydraulic pressure. Simultaneously, the "shotgun blast" and violent swerve were caused by structural failure consistent with Rear Brake Caliper Bolt Fracture (GM 13247 / NHTSA 13V342) and Rear Axle Shaft/Pin Fracture (GM 14892 / NHTSA 14V819). This mechanical collapse caused the caliper to strike the wheel, resulting in a catastrophic rim blowout and immediate loss of tire pressure. Despite the vehicle having aftermarket long-tube headers installed, the root cause of the heat-related brake failure was the failure of the OEM GM manifold fasteners which snapped off in the cylinder head, as documented in the aforementioned bulletins. Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, the manufacturer remains liable for these pre-existing safety-critical defects. The vehicle is at Glenn Polk Chevrolet for a 901-series Product Allegation Investigation (Case #90199492). This report is filed to demand federal oversight into these life-threatening defects. The combo of failed fasteners, rim blowout, and compromised braking created a vehicle that was both unable to be steered or stopped

The power steering failed while operating the vehicle. Unsafe. Local GMC dealership Haggerty in Oak Lawn, IL not able to diagnose problem after fact. My safety and others were at risk. Not confirmed, as techs are not familiar with system. No warnings prior to power steering failure. Be advised, this is a hybrid pickup, and as such, does not have a traditional power steering pump system. Other GM models from the same era have had recalls, but the Silverados and Sierras were somehow omitted. The power steering assist motor has failed. Not the "brains", module.

The main body frame is completely rusting through from under the drivers side door back past the fuel tank. It is rusting through on the passenger side as well. The large amounts of rust have caused other issues throughout the entire body of the truck as well as rusting of other components. The frame of this truck will need to be replaced as there is no way to repair it or the vehicle becomes scrap. This vehicle is available for inspection. These issues were not visible when purchased from the dealer. This issue gradually became visible after the rust and undercoating wore away that had been applied previous to our purchase from a known dealership.

I WAS ABLE TO PULL TRUCK TO SHOULDER AND WAIT A FEW MINUTES BEFORE BEING ABLE TO TURN ON AGAIN AND GET IT HOME. I HAVE TAKEN THE TRUCK TO MY LOCAL DEALER EVERY TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED AND THEY ONLY REPLACE THE THROTTLE BODY SENSOR. IT'S THE SECOND TIME THE TRUCK HAS STOPPED RESPONDING WHILE DRIVING. THE FIRST TIME WAS ON A HIGHWAY 99 WHEN ALL LIGHTS CAME ON AND TRUCK STARTED SLOWING DOWN DUE TO LACK OF ENGINE POWER. I WAS LEFT STRANDED ONCE AND HAD TO GET TRUCK TOWED FOR A TOTAL OF $430. I'M FEELING UNSAFE IN MY VEHICLE AND GM HAS IGNORED MY CONCERNS ABOUT THIS ISSUE.

WHILE DRIVING ON HIGHWAY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND LOST POWER. ALSO STARTED TO HEAR TAPPING COMING FROM ENGINE. HAD IT CHECKED BY MECHANIC. FOUND CODE P0306 CYLINDER 6 MISFIRE. CHECKED GM TRUCK WEB SITE AND NOTED SERVICE BULLETIN NOTING VALVE LIFTER FAILURE, BUT NO RECALL. BULLETIN STATES THAT LIFTER CAN FAIL CAUSING MISFIRE AND TAPING IN MOTOR. ALSO STATES DURING REPAIR TO CHECK CAM SHAFT FOR SCORING & DAMAGE. ALSO CHECKED SEVERAL GM & CHEVY CAR FORM WEBSITES, AND NOTED MULTIPLE COMPLAINTS ABOUT SAME ISSUES AS WELL AS SEVERAL NEAR ACCIDENTS BECAUSE OF LOSS OF POWER WHILE DRIVING. THERE ARE ALSO SEVERAL YOUTUBE VIDEOS OF ISSUES WITH THIS MOTOR AND VALVE LIFTER FAILURE. THIS HAPPENS BECAUSE CYLINDERS SHUT DOWN DURING CRUISING. LIFTERS THAT FAIL HAVE A SPRING ATTACHED THAT FAILS CAUSING THE MISFIRE AND SCORING TO CAM SHAFT. GM IS AWARE OF ISSUE BUT FAILS TO ISSUES A RECALL FOR REPAIRS TO THIS MOTOR. THIS IS A HAZARD AND COULD CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. REPAIRS SHOULD ALSO BE COVERED BY GM AS THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS MOTOR AND THEY ARE AWARE OF IT WITH THEIR IN HOUSE SERVICE BULLETIN TO SERVICE MANAGERS. THIS ISSUES CAN HAPPEN AND BE COVERED BY SERVICE WARRANTY, BUT NOT COVERED WHEN OUT OF WARRANTY. BULLETIN ALSO GOES ON TO STATE HOW TO WRITE IT UP IF COVERED BY POWERTRAIN WARRANTY.

AFTER APPLYING BRAKE TO SLOW DOWN TO < 5 MPH (NOT COMING TO A HALT) AND THEN TRYING TO ACCELERATE, VEHICLE BECOMES UNRESPONSIVE FOR 1 TO 2 SECONDS; IT FEELS LIKE THE TRANSMISSION GOES INTO NEUTRAL DURING THE BRAKING PERIOD AND WHEN GAS PEDAL IS APPLIED, THERE IS A 1 - 2 SECOND TIME PERIOD WHERE VEHICLE IS TRYING TO FIGURE OUT SOMETHING AND PREVENTS ANY ACCELERATION. WHY IS THIS DANGEROUS? I FOUND MYSELF IN A LEFT TURN ONLY LANE/GREEN LIGHT WITH OPPOSING TRAFFIC, AND I ATTEMPTED THE LEFT TURN WITH ONCOMING TRAFFIC BECAUSE I THOUGHT THAT I HAD AMPLE TIME BUT THE VEHICLE JUST SAT THERE FOR 1 - 2 SECONDS, AND WITH THAT I FOUND MYSELF IN A DANGEROUS PREDICAMENT BECAUSE THE ONCOMING TRAFFIC WAS GETTING VERY CLOSE. IF THE VEHICLE HAD RESPONDED WHEN I NEEDED IT TO, IT WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN A CLOSE CALL. THIS BEHAVIOR WITH THE VEHICLE CAN BE REPRODUCED AT WILL, EVERY TIME. THERE ARE MANY FORUMS ON THE INTERNET WHERE MANY PEOPLE ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT THIS SAME ISSUE WITH THE DRIVE-TRAIN, GMC KNOWS ABOUT IT, BUT REFUSES TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. *TR

I towed a U-Haul trailer for four hours from Winter Springs, FL to Tallahassee, FL 08/18/2022. On the way back to Winter Springs, FL on 08/21/2022, I began to hear the dings and a message to service the trailer brake system. I had the vehicle looked at to determine the problem. The fuse was determined to be good, the ground wire was secure and not damaged, and the relay was functioning. I have been told that it may be a defective wire harness which could lead to other safety issues while operating the vehicle. The constant dinging and the blocking of vital messaging by the warning is a distraction and safety issue. A recall should be issued to correct this safety defect.

OEM TIRES HAVE EXTREMELY POOR WET PAVEMENT TRACTION. FIRST INCIDENT OCCURRED LESS THAN 30 DAYS AFTER PURCHASING THE VEHICLE. IT HAD RAINED HEAVILY FOR AN EXTENDED TIME THAT DAY AND CONTINUING MODERATELY INTO THE EVENING. APPROACHING THE INTERSECTION WHERE I INTENDED TO MAKE A TURN ONTO A SIDE STREET, I BEGAN SLOWING TO WHAT I CONSIDERED A SAFE AND PRUDENT SPEED GIVEN THE ROAD CONDITIONS. UPON APPLYING THE BRAKES THE VEHICLE COULD NOT BE STOPPED RESULTING IN SLIDING COMPLETELY STRAIGHT THROUGH THE INTERSECTION, LUCKILY ON A GREEN SIGNAL LIGHT, AND WITH NO OTHER TRAFFIC IN MY PATH. REALIZING I WAS NOT SLOWING SUFFICIENTLY TO NEGOTIATE THE TURN, I DID NOT ATTEMPT TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL AND CONTINUED DOWN THE SAME STREET TO A SAFE AREA TO TURN AROUND AND RETURN TO THE STREET I INTENDED TO TURN ONTO. SECOND INCIDENT, AGAIN ON WET PAVEMENT, WAS AFTER MAKING A COMPLETE STOP AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT CONTROLLED INTERSECTION. WHEN THE SIGNAL LIGHT CHANGED TO GREEN, I STARTED NEGOTIATING A LEFT TURN. APPROXIMATELY HALF WAY THROUGH THE INTERSECTION, AT A SPEED OF LESS THAN 10 MPH, REAR TIRES LOST TRACTION AND THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE TRIED TO SWAP ENDS. NEEDLESS TO SAY, MY WIFE YELLED AT ME TO STOP DOING WHATEVER IT WAS THAT I DID TO CAUSE SUCH ACTION, TO WHICH I REPLIED. I DID NOT DO ANYTHING OTHER THAN START MOVING FORWARD AT A SLOW PACE AND WAS JUST AS SURPRISED AS SHE WAS BY THE BEHAVIOR OF THE VEHICLE. *TR

I OWN A 2011 GMC SIERRA 3500 6.6 DURAMAX DIESEL TRUCK. WHEN THE TRUCK IS "REGEN-ING" THE "DPF", RAW FUEL LEAKS FROM AN EXHAUST COUPLING LOCATED AT THE TURBO AND DOWN-PIPE SATURATING THE HOT EXHAUST PIPE WITH FUEL. WHEN YOU COME TO A STOP WHILE IT IS IN THIS REGEN MODE WHITE SMOKE BOILS OUT FROM UNDER THE HOOD AND ENTERS THE CABIN INDUCING A COUGHING FIT AND BURNING EYES. I TOOK THE TRUCK TO A GMC DEALER IN SAN ANGELO TX AND TOLD THEM ABOUT THE PROBLEM. WAS TOLD THAT THEY COULDN'T REPLICATE THE PROBLEM THAT I WAS DESCRIBING AND THAT I SHOULD REST ASSURED BECAUSE "DIESEL WON'T BURN ANYWAY". *TR

THE HEADLIGHTS DIM THEN RETURN TO NORMAL EVERY TIME THE BREAK IS APPLIED. INTERIOR LIGHTS DIM AND RETURN TO NORMAL WHEN HAZARD LIGHTS ARE ACTIVATED. DEALER FOUND THE COMPLAINT TO BE VALID. BATTERY TESTED AND FOUND TO BE GOOD. VOLTAGE TEST OF ALTERNATOR CHECKED OUT NORMAL. ENGINE AND BODY GROUNDS CHECKED OUT NORMAL. DEALER REPLACED BRAKE SWITCH WITH NEW PART WITH NO CHANGE. GENERAL MOTORS REFERENCED SERVICE BULLETIN #02-06-03-008D AND CLAIM THE TRUCK IS OPERATING AS DESIGNED. AFTER SEVERAL CONVERSATIONS WITH GM CUSTOMER SERVICE THEY TOLD ME THERE WAS NOTHING THEY WOULD DO ABOUT THE DESIGN OF THE SYSTEM AND I AM STUCK WITH THE TRUCK AS IS. THE GM SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE [name removed] TO SEND ME ANY DOCUMENTATION REGARDING MY CUSTOMER CLAIM AND DIRECTED ME BACK TO THE SERVICE BULLETIN AND THE DEALER. I HAVE INVESTED A LOT OF MONEY INTO THIS VEHICLE AND HAVE NO CONFIDENCE IN ITS SAFETY AT NIGHT. MY GM CUSTOMER CLAIM #[XXX]. THIS TRUCK WAS PURCHASED NEW AND I WOULD NOT ALLOW MY FAMILY TO OPERATE IT AT NIGHT AND I AM VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THE LIGHT SYSTEM FAILING OR SHORTING OUT AS THE VEHICLE GETS OLDER. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

WIPERS AND WASHERS COME ON BY THEMSELVES SURPRISING THE DRIVER AND PARTIALLY OBSCURING HIS VISION. IT IS NECESSARY TO PULL OVER AND SHUT OFF THE IGNITION TO GET THEM TO STOP, THEN IT HAPPENS ANGAIN EVERY SO OFTEN DURING AN OUTING.
