Recalls and owner complaints reported to NHTSA

Compared with the typical (middle) count of 1,003 complaints across the 6 model-year 2015 half-ton trucks we cover. Best-selling trucks naturally collect more complaints because more of them are on the road.

Price & value

We don't guess at prices. Get a real value for the exact truck from Kelley Blue Book, then see how the asking price compares.

Is it a good deal?

  1. Look up the truck on Kelley Blue Book. Choose its cab, trim, options, miles, condition and your ZIP code, and note the private party value (or the fair purchase price if you're buying from a dealer).
  2. Enter that value and the asking price below.
Check value on Kelley Blue Book ↗

Enter both numbers to see the deal rating.

The rating only compares the two numbers you enter: within 5% of the value is a good deal, 5–15% under is a great deal, and more than 15% under is a buy-it-now price. Know Your Truck isn't affiliated with Kelley Blue Book. Rust, accident history, lifts and mods, and service records all change what a truck is worth, so always get a pre-purchase inspection.

While being previously remedied for recall 16V-651, the affected vehicles may not have received the complete software update necessary to remedy the recall condition. Without the update, certain driving conditions may cause the air bag sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) software to activate a diagnostic test. During this test, deployment of the frontal air bags and the seat belt pretensioners would not occur in the event of a crash.

Risk: A failure of the front air bags or seat belt pretensioners to deploy in the event of a crash necessitating deployment increases the risk of injury to the driver and front passenger.

Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the SDM software. Vehicles that have had a previous air bag deployment will have the SDM replaced. I had and still have the Brake Assist failure warning light on and having issues with brake pedal effort not working as it should to stop vehicle and also the stability control warning lights., the brakes hardly work at all at low speeds and most of the time don't stop the vehicle almost causing several crashes. I took vehicle to gm service center and they said they updated software but when I picked up the vehicle and drove it not long after the brake assist warning came back on and I still had no brakes at slower speeds and the problem had actually gotten worse than it was before i took it to them. I called the dealership and told them that the problem had not been fixed and it was worse they said that I would have to pay the service fee / price for parts if I wanted to bring the vehicle back in and to have problem fixed...I explained it was a re call and it was taken to them to have issue fixed in the first place ...and I was told I would have to pay since they updated software ..I then explained it was worse than when I took it to them and still got denied any kind of resolution to the problem. Nothing was fixed or solved. I still had the warning lights on dash and the problem was worse then when I took the vehicle to them for repair. Not long after the transmission went out and the vehicle hadn't been drove. So it sat for 2 yrs or so. I just got a new one put in and the vehicle still has the same problems with the brake system . I reached out to dealership once again and was told I would still have to pay to have the issues fixed when it was never taken care of by them to begin with.

Headlights on this vehicle, since purchased, have not cast enough light in order to see in unlit backroads, or extrememly dim areas. I have to drive with my brights on constantly, in order to get enough light thrown onto the road, for the left and right sides, as well as the front. These were not working well since purchase. I took my child to a friends house in rural PA, and I literally could NOT SEE THE street signs, let alone far enough down the road. I nearly hit a stone wall.. My eyes keep asking to see more, but truck does not produce enough headlight. I even went to the eye doctor, after that situation, thinking it was my vision dimming, but was told I have 20/20. There needs to be a formal recall. I am not the only one complaining about these HORRIBLE projection headlights. To replace these headlights would cost over 1000K, out of pocket, which is not something I should have to fix. I am complaining now, because with the light getting darker earlier, am noticing how lousy driving at night really is.. and honestly, being BLINDED by oncoming LED's , without having proper headlights on my truck in order to see when blinded, really [XXX]. Please address these [XXX]. Make headlights great again! INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Lack of illumination of headlights straight ahead. No light shines to the sides of the vehicle making it difficult to see left or right when negotiating a turn at night. I have put new bulbs in both sides the best money can buy at CarQuest with no improvement. The headlight lenses are not dirty or fogged over. It appears to be a design problem, and I have seen other people with this model truck complain about the same thing on some blogs. I contacted GM directly looking for information I can get on a possible upgrade, and they have offered not solution. I have had this issue with this vehicle since buying it used 4.28.2018

The stock headlights both low and high beams provide poor lighting at night. The headlights provide a poor beam pattern making it incredibly difficult to see more than 100 ft in front of you while driving down dark roads. And even more difficult in light storm conditions both rain and snow. The high beams aim too high when used and don't show enough of the road in front of you but rather the tops of tree's or other objects instead of the road. The low beams don't provide much light on the sides of the road as well and at times feel more like they're just fog lights with the amount of light that is put out. These incidents happen anywhere from low speeds up to highway speeds. I have noticed this issue since purchasing it used and have seen multiple similar complaints online.

The shuddering got worse and worse to the point i took it to a transmission shop to look at it and they said i needed a replacement transmission unit. I did get a replacement unit, the whole process was extremely unpleasant. The previous unit was sent as a core to be remanufactured. The company that i used to get a remanufactured unit is Fraser Transmissions. No warning lamps appeared prior to the transmission acting up.

Another GM truck AFM failing. It failed at 70,000 miles causing P0307 cylinder 7 misfire. No aggressive driving just commuting to work. Truck just got done with a new oil change. It's another to add to the hundreds/thousands seen on Reddit threads of all 5.3/6.2 AFM/DFM that this organization turns a blind eye to.

The engine seized up traveling about 40MPH in the middle lane on a busy road with my child in the passenger seat. I was able to get off the busy road but part of my truck was still intruding into the lane. The truck is parked at my house. The vehicle has not been inspected by anyone and is still in the same condition as the day the engine seized. The only thing that indicted any issue was a couple popping noises right before the engine seized. It all happened while I was driving in traffic and I did not notice any indications on dash. I was more concerned about getting off the road and out of traffic before I got rear-ended or involved in a pile up.

My son's 2015 GMC Sierra side impact air bags went off while he was driving. He had no impact. He thought he hit a small pot hole but after driving back on the road, it was recently paved so it was not a pot hole. He guessed it was the edge of the road from the recent paving that he hit. He heard a loud noise like a gun shot. His cabin filled up with smoke and the side impact air bags when off. When he took the truck to the GM Dealership, it gave a code for front air bag deployment due to impact. But the side air bags went off and there was no impact. The only damage to the truck is the deployed side airbags and the locked seatbelts. He has a warranty but they kicked it to GM. Warranty stated that if they fixed it, they were worried that it would happen again. We filed a claim with GM. After GM sent three different inspectors out and over 5 weeks later, they denied the claim. They have also not sent the inspection reports as requested. My son did not have this truck for the first three months he owned it because GM could not find the faulty code causing transmission issues. I am worried the air bags deployment will happen again while he is driving at a high speed and cause a serious wreck.

On 1/13/2022 I was driving down the road with the rear defroster on, a smell of burning plastic and a low hissing noise. I was in the process of pulling over to inspect this and the back window of my pickup burst, sending me swerving onto the side of the road. I booked an appointment with the dealer, they are telling me they cannot replace this since the recall was already serviced. Obviously the fix GM is putting into our vehicles is as dangerous as the original design. This needs to be remedied and GM needs to be held accountable, bursting rear windows can cause terrible accidents, luckily I am safe.

The component or system failed was the transmission 4 different times. A new transmission was put in the car just 6 months after purchasing from a dealer. The transmission lasted close to 3 years being shy only a few days before the transmission warranty expired. So a new transmission was provided by the transmission owner at no additional cost for the transmission but we had to pay $1600 out of pocket for labor. That transmission lasted for 2 months before failing again which caused us to have the truck towed to our home to decide what our next step would be. So we had it towed to Tire max and they put in another transmission by the same manufacturer which we only had 2 days left under the warranty. That transmission failed within 2-3 days so we took it back to a different Tire Max location and they put in another transmission which did not cost anything for us by the manufacturer including labor. This transmission has now been in good standing since 12/20/23.

I CONTACTED YOUR CUSTOMER SUPPORT OFFICE AND WAS TOLD THAT THEY COULD NOT DO ANYTHING FOR ME AS I WAS THE SECOND OWNER AND I SHOULD CONTACT CARMAX. OF COURSE CARMAX SAYS, CALL CONTINENTAL. THE CODE ON ALL 4 OF MY TIRES IS A32A WBDE 2215. I HAVE ENCLOSED A FEW PHOTOS OF THE FRONT TIRES, THE BACK TIRES ARE SHOWING THE SAME SEPARATION FROM THE STEEL BELT, BUT NONE OF THE TREAD HAS COME OFF YET. I BELIEVE THE TURNING BACK AND FORTH OF THE FRONT TIRES HAS ACCELERATED THEIR DEMISE. I HAVE PURCHASED 4 NEW GOODYEAR TIRES BECAUSE I TRULY FEAR FOR MY FAMILIES SAFETY. I WOULD APPRECIATE YOUR TIME AND CONSIDERATION IN THIS MATTER.

BOUGHT SET OF FOUR DYNAPRO HT P255 70R17 TIRES. HAD TO TAKE THEM IN FOR RE-BALANCING THREE TIMES DUE TO ROUGH BUMPY RIDE. THIRD RE-BALANCING WAS TO A DIFFERENT DEALER THAN THE ORIGINAL SELLER. HE SAID TIRES WERE BADLY "OUT OF ROUND". ORIGINAL DEALER REPLACED TIRES WITH MICHELIN. HAD TO HAVE THESE TIRES 'ROAD FORCE BALANCED' AND PROBLEM WAS SOLVED.

MY TRUCK SUFFERS FROM VIBRATION PROBLEMS, THE SAME THING THAT 10,837 OTHER POSTS FROM OTHER PEOPLE SUFFERING THE SAME PROBLEM ARE TALKING ABOUT ON THIS FORUM. HTTP://WWW.GM-TRUCKS.COM/FORUMS/TOPIC/153186-SHAKE-OR-VIBRATION-ISSUES/PAGE-723 THIS FORUM HAS BEEN VIEWED OVER 1.5 MILLION TIMES WHICH MEANS A TON OF PEOPLE ARE HAVING THIS ISSUE. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY A RISK TO MOTOR VECHICLE SAFETY AND ABSOLUTELY EXISTS IN A GROUP OF VECHICLES OF THE SAME DESIGN OR MANUFACTURE. THE PROBLEMS THIS SHAKE PRESENTS THAT POSE A DANGER ARE VIBRATIONS SO SIGNIFICANT THAT IT CAN CAUSE DRIVER DISTRACTION, FATIGUE ON LONG TRIPS, POTENTIAL LOSS OF CONTROL, NOT TO MENTION LONG TERM HEALTH EFFECTS FROM VIBRATION EXPOSURE. THE HEALTH EFFECTS DEFINED ARE AS FOLLOWS: "THE EFFECTS OF WHOLE BODY VIBRATION (WBV) HAVE BEEN STUDIED EXTENSIVELY IN OCCUPATIONAL MEDICINE. IN PARTICULAR, IT HAS BEEN SHOWN THAT WHEN THE BODY UNDERGOES CHRONICALLY TO WHOLE BODY VIBRATIONS SPINAL DEGENERATION IS LIKELY TO BE ONE OF THE DELETERIOUS OUTCOMES. LOW BACK PAIN HAS BEEN SHOWN TO BE THE LEADING MAJOR CAUSE OF INDUSTRIAL DISABILITY IN THE POPULATION UNDER THE AGE OF 45 YEARS AND HAS BEEN LINKED TO WHOLE BODY VIBRATION EXPOSURE ENCOUNTERED IN SOME INDUSTRIAL SETTINGS. WHOLE BODY VIBRATION HAS BEEN RECENTLY PURPOSED AS AN EXERCISE INTERVENTION SUGGESTING ITS EFFECTIVENESS IN INCREASING FORCE-GENERATING CAPACITY IN LOWER LIMBS AND LOW BACK. IT HAS ALSO BEEN REPORTED TO BE AN EFFECTIVE NON-PHARMACOLOGICAL INTERVENTION FOR PATIENTS WITH LOW BACK PAIN. RELATIVELY SHORT EXPOSURE TO WHOLE BODY VIBRATION HAS BEEN ALSO SHOWN TO INCREASE THE SERUM LEVELS OF TESTOSTERONE AND GROWTH HORMONE. THE COMBINED EFFECTS ON THE NEUROMUSCULAR SYSTEM AND ENDOCRINE SYSTEM SEEM TO SUGGEST ITS EFFECTIVENESS AS A THERAPEUTIC APPROACH FOR SARCOPENIA AND POSSIBLY OSTEOPOROSIS."

Rainy road, 60mph on the hw with my family. Truck decides to engage stabilitrak or something to that feel and locked up the brakes. Talk about a scary moment with an 18 wheeler coming in hot behind you. Obviously, in the moment, I had no clue what was happening other than something with the truck was malfunctioning. This scenario could have gone wrong in so many ways. I'm honestly in shock someone has not been killed because of this?

When I turn the steering wheel, the ac turns off, lights turn off, the computer screen turns off, steering wheel gets hard and does a jerking movement. The truck turns off too and then suddenly turns on. This can cause a death. If this happens in a highway or a street where speed is high this can easily cause a death.. fortunately this has happened going at 30 mph and no one close at the time and also at a drive through fast food restaurant. It has not been confirmed by the dealer but I will soon have to take it. The only light that comes up is the StabiliTrak.. but it only lights up when it happens and then it goes away.

I am reporting a critical issue with the transmission. The transmission frequently slips, hesitates, and jerks unexpectedly during acceleration and gear shifts. On multiple occasions, the vehicle has lost power or failed to respond while entering intersections, merging onto highways, or attempting to accelerate—posing a serious safety risk. The issue often occurs without warning and has worsened over time. Additionally, there are instances of harsh downshifting, delayed engagement from park to drive, and sudden lurching forward or backward, which could easily result in a collision. Despite visits to the dealership and complaints made, the issue has not been resolved, and I’ve learned that many other owners of this same model have reported nearly identical symptoms. This appears to be a systemic problem with the transmission system. Given the safety risk, especially in traffic and at high speeds, I strongly believe this defect warrants immediate investigation and a formal recall.
