2000–2006 Toyota Tundra common problems and fixes
Frame rust dominates: about 4 in 10 complaints describe rusted frames; Toyota offered frame replacements and coatings on 2000–2003 trucks for a limited time. Lower ball joints and brake vibration on early trucks are the other big issues.
What owners should know
Covers 2000–2006 · 4.7L V8, 3.4L V6 (2000–2004), 4.0L V6 (2005–2006) · Updated 2026-10-06
The first Tundra was sold with a 4.7L V8 or a V6 (3.4L until 2004, then 4.0L). Its frames are the main concern.
We counted 3,666 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for 2000–2006 Tundras (retrieved October 5, 2026; each complaint counted once): 2,814 from 4.7L V8s and 345 from V6s, identified by VIN; the rest (507) couldn't be matched to an engine. We left out 21 whose VIN belongs to another vehicle (e.g. a Sequoia, a Tacoma or a trailer), and about 70 complaints that NHTSA labels only "Toyota" or that also name another vehicle, because we can't tell which vehicle they're about. 2000 trucks have the most complaints (1,008). Complaint counts show what owners report most often, not how many trucks have a problem.
At a glance
- Frame rust is by far the biggest problem: about 1,400 complaints.
- Lower ball joints were recalled on certain 2002–2006 trucks.
- Brake vibration and warped rotors are common on 2000–2002 trucks.
- Certain 2003–2006 trucks were recalled for Takata air bag inflators.
Frame rust
About 1,400 complaints, roughly 4 in 10, mention the frame along with rust, corrosion, rot or perforation, from scaly rails to frames rusted through. For 2000–2003 trucks, Toyota offered frame replacement for perforated frames for a limited time, plus corrosion-resistant coating campaigns; those offers have ended. On forums, owners of 2004–2006 trucks report more limited help. Toyota also recalled certain 2000–2003 trucks sold or registered in cold-climate states because the rear crossmember can rust enough to drop the spare tire and damage the rear brake lines (09V444000); until it's inspected, Toyota asks owners to remove the spare tire from under the truck.
Front end
About 280 complaints mention ball joints. Toyota recalled lower ball joints on certain 2002–2004 and 2004–2006 trucks (05V225000, 07V013000) because they can wear and loosen.
Brakes
About 780 complaints mention brakes, 286 of them from 2000 trucks. About 290 complaints from 2000–2002 trucks describe brake vibration, pulsation or warped rotors. Owners on forums describe a Toyota upgrade to larger front calipers for early trucks.
Recalls to check
- Takata air bag inflators that had been replaced earlier with the same type, on certain 2003–2006 trucks (19V741000)
- Lower ball joints (05V225000, 07V013000)
- Rear crossmember corrosion on certain 2000–2003 trucks in cold-climate states (09V444000)
Before you buy
- Check open recalls at nhtsa.gov/recalls with the VIN.
- Get under the truck with a flashlight and tap the frame with a hammer; flaking scale or soft spots are bad signs.
- Check for front-end clunks and brake vibration.
- Bring our used truck inspection checklist.

Common failures & how to fix them
Parts and video buttons search for your 2000-2006 Toyota Tundra. Always confirm a part fits using your VIN. Brakes, steering, fuel and airbag work affects your safety, so if you're not sure, have a qualified mechanic do it.
Frame rust
Best left to a shopSigns: Scaly, flaking or perforated frame rails, especially behind the cab and near the rear springs.
Fix: Toyota's frame programs for 2000–2003 trucks (a limited-time frame replacement offer for perforated frames and corrosion-resistant coating campaigns) have ended; ask a Toyota dealer if anything is still open for the VIN, including recall 09V444000 for the rear crossmember. Have a qualified frame or body shop assess any heavy scaling or holes. A frame with holes needs replacing before the truck is safe.
Lower ball joint failure
Moderate DIYSigns: Clunking from the front end. A failed ball joint can let a front wheel collapse.
Fix: Covered by Toyota recalls 05V225000 (certain 2002–2004 trucks) and 07V013000 (certain 2004–2006 trucks). Otherwise have the front end checked for play; if the lower ball joints are worn, they're bolted in and can be replaced. Recalls cover only specific trucks, so check this VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if it's included and whether the repair was done.
May be covered free by recall 05V225000 / 07V013000. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Brake vibration and warped rotors (2000–2002)
Easy DIYSigns: A pulsing brake pedal and shaking steering wheel when braking, coming back soon after new rotors.
Fix: Check rotor runout and pad condition first; worn suspension parts can also shake under braking. Owners on forums describe a Toyota upgrade to larger front calipers for early trucks; we couldn't check the bulletin itself, so ask a Toyota dealer whether it applies or was done. Quality rotors and pads, properly torqued wheels and a properly adjusted rear brake help.
