1999–2004 Toyota Tacoma common problems and fixes

Frame rust is nearly half of all complaints; Toyota bought back or reframed many trucks. Lower ball joints and spare tire carriers in salt states were also recalled.

What owners should know

Covers 1999–2004 · 3.4L V6, 2.7L and 2.4L four · Updated 2026-10-05

The first Tacoma generation (sold from 1995; we cover 1999 on) came with a 3.4L V6, a 2.7L four or a 2.4L four.

We counted 1,949 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for 1999–2004 Tacomas (retrieved October 5, 2026; each complaint counted once): 903 from V6s, 519 from 2.7L fours and 235 from 2.4L fours, identified by VIN. The other 292 had a missing VIN or one that couldn't be matched. We left out about 55 complaints that NHTSA labels only "Toyota", because they may be about another Toyota, and 11 whose VIN belongs to another vehicle (such as a Tundra or 4Runner). Complaint counts show what owners report most often, not how many trucks have a problem.

At a glance

  • Frame rust: about 900 complaints, close to half of the total.
  • Lower ball joints were recalled on 2001–2004 trucks.
  • Spare tire carriers were recalled in salt states.

Frame rust

About 900 complaints mention rust, corrosion or holes in the frame. Toyota extended the frame warranty on 1995–2000 trucks to 15 years and bought back trucks it couldn't repair; 2001–2004 trucks got frame replacements under a later program. Those programs have ended. Many surviving trucks already have a new frame; others are badly rusted.

Recalls to check

  • Lower ball joints on 2001–2004 trucks (05V225000)
  • Spare tire carrier on 2001–2004 trucks in salt states (12V542000)

Common failures & how to fix them

Parts and video buttons search for your 1999-2004 Toyota Tacoma. Always confirm a part fits using your VIN. Brakes, steering, fuel and airbag work affects your safety, so if you're not sure, have a qualified mechanic do it.

  • Frame rust

    Best left to a shop

Signs: Flaking or perforated frame rails, especially near the rear leaf spring hangers.

Fix: Toyota's frame programs for these trucks (a 15-year warranty extension with buybacks for 1995–2000 trucks, and frame replacement for 2001–2004 trucks) have ended. Have a qualified shop inspect the whole frame. A frame with holes needs replacing; check whether the truck already got a new frame.

  • Lower ball joint failure (2001–2004)

    Moderate DIY

Signs: Clunking from the front end. A failed ball joint can let a front wheel collapse.

Fix: Covered by a Toyota recall for 2001–2004 trucks. Otherwise replace the lower ball joints. Recalls cover only specific trucks, so check this VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if it's included and whether the repair was done.

May be covered free by recall 05V225000. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

  • Spare tire can fall (salt states, 2001–2004)

    Dealer job

Signs: A rusted spare tire carrier that can drop the spare onto the road.

Fix: Covered by a Toyota recall for trucks sold or registered in cold, salt-heavy states; Toyota ran a separate inspection campaign (CSV) for trucks in other states. Recalls cover only specific trucks, so check this VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if it's included and whether the repair was done.
