2017–2024 Nissan Titan common problems and fixes

The transmission is the most reported problem, and certain 2020–2023 Titans were recalled because the transmission may not lock in Park: apply the parking brake every time you park until the recall work is done.

What owners should know

Covers 2017–2024 · 5.6L V8 · Updated 2026-10-06

The second-generation Titan arrived for 2017 with a 5.6L V8, first with a 7-speed automatic and, from 2020, a 9-speed. (The heavier Titan XD, including the Cummins diesel, isn't covered here.) Nissan ended production after 2024.

NHTSA files some Titan XD complaints under plain "Titan", so we used each complaint's VIN to leave them out. We counted 265 owner complaints for 2017–2024 Titans (retrieved October 5, 2026; each complaint counted once): 255 identified by VIN as 5.6L trucks; the rest (10) couldn't be matched to an engine. No complaints had a VIN belonging to another vehicle. The low number is partly because far fewer Titans were sold than other full-size trucks. Complaint counts show what owners report most often, not how many trucks have a problem.

At a glance

  • The transmission is the most reported problem: about 80 complaints.
  • Certain 2020–2023 trucks were recalled because the transmission may not lock in Park. Apply the parking brake every time you park until the recall work is done.
  • Other recalls cover wiring, air bags and tires.

Transmission

About 80 complaints mention the transmission, shifting, gears or limp mode, 28 of them from 2021 trucks. Owners describe the transmission getting stuck in a gear, going into limp mode, slipping, or hesitating and then lunging. On TitanTalk, owners of 2017–2019 trucks with the 7-speed report valve body and torque converter replacements, and that software updates help some trucks but not all. Have it diagnosed before parts are replaced.

Parking pawl recalls (2020–2023)

Nissan found that the transmission parking pawl may not engage when the truck is shifted into Park, so it can roll away. Two recalls cover it: 22V457000 replaces the parking pawl pin on certain 2020–2022 Titans, and 22V671000 reprograms the transmission computer (and the engine computer on 2020–2022 Titans) on certain 2020–2023 Titans. Until the work is done, Nissan advises owners to apply the parking brake every time they park. Check the VIN for both recalls.

Recalls to check

  • Parking pawl that may not engage on certain 2020–2023 trucks (22V457000, 22V671000)
  • Alternator wiring that may have been damaged at the factory on certain 2017–2019 gas trucks (19V495000)
  • Engine wiring harness with an exposed wire on certain 2020 trucks (20V759000)
  • Air bag control unit missing a spacer on certain 2021 and 2024 trucks (24V580000), and a driver air bag inflator on certain 2024 trucks (24V154000)
  • Tires: Continental tires on certain 2018–2021 trucks (21V169000) and tires with a torn bead on certain 2023 trucks (23V273000)

    Dealer job

Signs: The truck can roll after being shifted into Park, especially if the parking brake isn't set. There may be no warning.

Fix: Apply the parking brake every time you park until the recall work is done; that is Nissan's interim advice. Recall 22V457000 replaces the transmission parking pawl pin on certain 2020–2022 Titans, and recall 22V671000 reprograms the transmission computer (and the engine computer on 2020–2022 Titans) on certain 2020–2023 Titans. Recalls cover only specific trucks, so check this VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if it's included and whether both repairs were done.

  • Transmission stuck in a gear or limp mode

    Dealer job

Signs: The truck won't shift past a certain gear, hesitates and lunges, or goes into limp mode, sometimes with gear ratio codes.

Fix: Have a Nissan dealer read the transmission codes, check the fluid and battery voltage (low voltage can upset shifting), and look for software updates and bulletins for this VIN. Owners on TitanTalk report valve body or torque converter replacements when updates didn't help, but those parts should be replaced only if diagnosis points to them.

  • Alternator wiring damage (gas trucks, 2017–2019)

    Dealer job

Signs: Charging warnings or electrical problems; damaged wiring can short.

Fix: Covered by Nissan recall 19V495000 for certain 2017–2019 gas Titans: the dealer inspects the alternator harness routing and replaces it if damaged. Recalls cover only specific trucks, so check this VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if it's included and whether the repair was done.
