2005–2021 Nissan Frontier common problems and fixes

2005–2007 trucks are the ones to watch: radiators that leak coolant into the automatic transmission and ruin it, fuel gauges that read wrong, and timing chain whine on the 4.0L V6. Later years have fewer complaints filed.

What owners should know

Covers 2005–2021 · 4.0L V6 (3.8L V6 for 2020–2021), 2.5L four · Updated 2026-10-05

The second-generation Frontier ran for 17 years. Most trucks have a 4.0L V6; a 2.5L four was offered too. For 2020–2021 the V6 was replaced by a 3.8L V6 with a 9-speed automatic.

We counted 2,331 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for 2005–2021 Frontiers (retrieved October 5, 2026; each complaint counted once): 1,758 from the 4.0L V6, 187 from the 2.5L and 39 from the 3.8L, identified by VIN; the rest couldn't be matched to an engine. We left out 9 whose VIN belongs to another vehicle. 2005–2007 have 1,661 of them; complaints drop sharply after that. Complaint counts show what owners report most often, not how many trucks have a problem.

At a glance

  • Radiators leaking coolant into the transmission: about 510 complaints, almost all from 2005–2008 trucks.
  • Fuel gauges that read wrong: about 535 complaints, nearly all 2005–2007.
  • Timing chain whine on the 4.0L V6.

Radiator and transmission

About 510 complaints describe coolant mixing with transmission fluid or a failed radiator, owners' "strawberry milkshake"; 500 of them are from 2005–2008 trucks. The transmission cooler inside the radiator cracks and coolant gets into the automatic transmission, which then shudders, slips and usually needs rebuilding. After a class-action lawsuit Nissan covered the radiator on 2005–2010 trucks for up to 10 years or 100,000 miles, but that coverage has run out. On Club Frontier, owners replace the original radiator and add a separate transmission cooler.

Fuel gauge

About 535 complaints mention the fuel gauge, fuel level, sending unit or codes P0461–P0463, sometimes leaving owners out of gas. Nissan's bulletin NTB07-069d replaces the fuel level sending unit on 2005–2007 and early 2008 trucks, and some 2006 and 2008 trucks were recalled because the tank shell could deform and stop the gauge from reading empty (10V075000).

Engine

About 50 complaints from 2005–2008 V6 trucks mention the timing chain. Nissan's bulletin NTB09-128a replaces the secondary timing chains and tensioner shoes once a dealer confirms the whine comes from them. Nissan also recalled 2005–2006 trucks for an engine computer relay in the fuse box that can make the engine stall (10V517000).

Recalls to check

  • Front crash sensors that corrode in road-salt states on 2005–2009 trucks (08V690000)
  • Driver's air bag cover emblem that can crack and detach on 2008–2011 trucks (23V067000)
  • Transmission parking pawl that may not engage on certain 2020–2021 trucks (22V457000 replaces the parking pawl pin; 22V671000 reprograms the transmission computer). Until the recalls are done, Nissan tells owners to set the parking brake every time they park.

Before you buy

  • Check open recalls at nhtsa.gov/recalls with the VIN.
  • On a 2005–2010 automatic, look at the coolant and transmission fluid for a pink, milky color and ask whether the radiator was replaced.
  • Fill the tank and see if the fuel gauge reads full.
  • Listen for a whine from the front of the engine.
  • Bring our used truck inspection checklist.

Common failures & how to fix them

Parts and video buttons search for your 2005-2021 Nissan Frontier. Always confirm a part fits using your VIN. Brakes, steering, fuel and airbag work affects your safety, so if you're not sure, have a qualified mechanic do it.

  • Radiator leaks coolant into the transmission (automatic, 2005–2010)

    Best left to a shop

Signs: Shuddering or slipping shifts, a flashing check engine light, and pink, milky fluid in the radiator or on the transmission dipstick (owners call it the "strawberry milkshake").

Fix: The transmission cooler built into the radiator can crack inside and let coolant into the transmission. Have a shop test the fluids before buying or repairing. Nissan's coverage after the class action (up to 10 years or 100,000 miles on 2005–2010 trucks) has run out. Once fluids mix, the transmission usually needs rebuilding or replacing, plus a new radiator. On trucks that haven't failed, owners often replace the original radiator (a moderate job) and many add a separate transmission cooler that bypasses the radiator.

  • Fuel gauge reads wrong (2005–2008)

    Moderate DIY

Signs: The gauge shows empty on a full tank, jumps around, or shows fuel left when the tank is empty; codes P0461, P0462 or P0463.

Fix: Check the VIN for the recall first: Nissan recalled some 2006 and 2008 trucks whose tank shells could deform and make the gauge read about a quarter tank when empty. Otherwise, Nissan's bulletin NTB07-069d covers 2005–2007 trucks and early 2008 trucks: if the gauge is erratic or codes P0461/P0462/P0463 are set, it replaces the fuel level sending unit (not the whole fuel pump). Have the codes and wiring checked before replacing parts. Recalls cover only specific trucks, so check this VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if it's included and whether the repair was done.

May be covered free by recall 10V075000. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

  • Timing chain whine (4.0L V6, mostly 2005–2007)

    Best left to a shop

Signs: A whining or buzzing sound from the front of the engine that rises with engine speed.

Fix: Nissan's bulletin NTB09-128a (2005–2010 Frontier with the 4.0L) says to first confirm the noise is a high-pitched buzz or whine that rises with engine speed; if it doesn't, the timing chain may not be the cause and the engine needs other diagnosis. If confirmed, the bulletin replaces both secondary timing chains and both tensioner shoes and changes the oil. Owners on Club Frontier report worn guides leading to engine damage when it's ignored.

  • Front air bag crash sensor corrodes (2005–2009, salt states)

    Dealer job

Signs: An air bag warning light that flashes or stays on.

Fix: Covered by a Nissan recall for trucks registered in road-salt states. Recalls cover only specific trucks, so check this VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if it's included and whether the repair was done.

May be covered free by recall 08V690000. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
