1999–2003 Ford F-150 common problems and fixes
Fire is the big theme: speed control switches that can overheat and fuel tank straps that rust through were both recalled, and the Triton V8s are known for blowing spark plugs out of the head.
What owners should know
Covers 1999–2003 · 4.6L and 5.4L Triton V8, 4.2L V6 · Updated 2026-10-05
The 10th-generation F-150 was the first with Triton V8s: a 4.6L and a 5.4L, plus a 4.2L V6 in base trucks. It was sold through 2003 (and as the 2004 F-150 Heritage).
We counted 4,538 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for 1999–2003 F-150s (retrieved October 5, 2026; each complaint counted once): 1,817 from 5.4L V8s (including the supercharged SVT Lightning), 1,002 from 4.6L V8s and 701 from 4.2L V6s, identified by VIN. The other 1,018 couldn't be matched to an engine, many because older complaints don't include a VIN. We left out 488 more complaints that also name other Ford vehicles, so they may not be about an F-150, and 58 whose VIN belongs to another vehicle (mostly F-250 and F-350 Super Duty trucks). Owners marked 788 complaints as involving a fire, about 1 in 6, a very high share. Complaint counts show what owners report most often, not how many trucks have a problem.
At a glance
- Fires: the speed control deactivation switch can overheat and burn, even with the truck off. Ford recalled it.
- Fuel tank straps rust through in the salt belt. Ford recalled them in 21 states.
- Spark plugs blow out of the cylinder head on Triton V8s, mostly 5.4L.
Speed control switch fires
The cruise control deactivation switch sits on the brake master cylinder. It can leak brake fluid internally, overheat and catch fire, sometimes hours after the truck was parked. Ford recalled 1999–2002 trucks under 05V388000 and some 2003 trucks under later campaigns (07V336000 and 07V078000), part of one of the largest recall series ever. About 1,060 complaints mention fire, flames or burning in the text (more than the 788 that owners marked as a fire, because some describe a fire risk or smoke rather than an actual fire).
Fuel tank straps
About 400 complaints mention fuel tank straps. When a strap breaks, the tank can drop and drag. Ford recalled certain 1997–2003 trucks sold or registered in 21 salt-belt states and Washington, D.C. (recall 11V385000). On forums, owners note that dealers sometimes found the brackets too rusty to bolt new straps to.
Spark plug blowouts
About 530 complaints describe a spark plug blowing out of the head, mostly from 5.4L trucks. Early Triton heads hold each plug with only a few threads. Forums recommend a full-length thread insert to repair the hole, and torquing plugs correctly at every change.
Before you buy
- Check open recalls at nhtsa.gov/recalls with the VIN.
- Look under the truck at the fuel tank straps and brake lines for rust.
- Ask whether a spark plug has ever blown out and how it was repaired.
- Bring our used truck inspection checklist.

Common failures & how to fix them
Parts and video buttons search for your 1999-2003 Ford F-150. Always confirm a part fits using your VIN. Brakes, steering, fuel and airbag work affects your safety, so if you're not sure, have a qualified mechanic do it.
Spark plug blows out of the cylinder head
Hard DIYSigns: A loud pop, then a ticking or puffing sound, a misfire and often a damaged coil.
Fix: First confirm the plug has actually come out (a loose coil or a cracked plug can sound similar). The aluminum heads have only a few threads holding each plug. Thread repair makers and forums recommend a full-length thread insert (not a coil-type insert), which can often be installed without removing the head, but drilling into the head is a job for an experienced mechanic. Torque plugs to Ford's spec at every change.
Speed control deactivation switch fire
Dealer jobSigns: The switch on the brake master cylinder leaks, overheats and can start an engine fire, even with the truck parked and off.
Fix: Covered by Ford's speed control switch recalls: 05V388000 for 1994–2002 F-150s and later campaigns (07V078000 and 07V336000) for some 2003 trucks; dealers install a fused wiring harness. Check the VIN to see if this truck is included and whether the repair was done, and until it is, park outdoors away from buildings.
May be covered free by recall 05V388000 / 07V336000 / 07V078000. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Fuel tank straps rust through
Moderate DIYSigns: A tank that sags or drags, or straps that are rusted thin. A broken strap can drop the tank.
Fix: Recall 11V385000 covers 1997–2003 F-150s (and the 2004 F-150 Heritage) originally sold or currently registered in 21 salt-belt states and Washington, D.C. Check the VIN. Trucks outside the recall need new straps and hardware at the owner's cost.
