What owners should know

The Silverado EV and its GMC twin, the Sierra EV, are full-size electric pickups built on GM's Ultium battery platform, with a midgate that opens the cab into the bed.
We counted only 63 owner complaints filed with NHTSA for 2024–2026 Silverado EVs and Sierra EVs (retrieved October 5, 2026; each complaint counted once), all from trucks whose VIN shows an electric drivetrain; no complaints had a VIN belonging to another vehicle. That's too few to show a clear pattern, partly because relatively few have been sold. Complaint counts show what owners report most often, not how many trucks have a problem.
At a glance
- Complaints are spread out. NHTSA files the most under the electrical system (21) and forward collision avoidance (10).
- Owners on Silverado EV Forum describe "Service High Voltage System" warnings, sometimes ending in a new battery pack.
- Recalls cover drive motor wiring, seat belts, wheels, the high-voltage battery and lights on certain trucks; check the VIN.
Recalls to check
- Rear drive motor wiring that can short and cause a loss of drive power on certain 2024 trucks (24V320000)
- Seat belt bolts or parts on certain 2024–2025 trucks (23V786000, 24V087000, 25V015000)
- Steel wheels that can crack on certain 2026 trucks (26V496000)
- High-voltage battery part that may not be secured on certain 2026 trucks (26V494000)
- Stability control warning light that may not come on on certain 2026 trucks (25V594000)
- Front turn signals too similar to the parking lights on certain 2024 Sierra EVs (24V755000), and a pedestrian alert that may be too quiet on certain 2025 Silverado EV work trucks (24V937000)
Before you buy
- Check open recalls at nhtsa.gov/recalls with the VIN, and ask a dealer which factory warranty coverage is left for this VIN; it depends on when the truck was first sold and its mileage.
- Look for warning messages. Don't judge the battery's health by the range shown on the dash, which changes with temperature and driving; ask a GM EV dealer for a battery health check.
- Bring our used truck inspection checklist.

"Service High Voltage System" warning
Dealer jobSigns: A "Service High Voltage System" message, reduced power or a truck that won't charge or drive.
Fix: Take it to a GM EV dealer to read the fault codes; the message has several possible causes. On Silverado EV Forum, some owners report a software fix or a 12-volt battery problem, and others a replacement battery pack. Don't assume the battery pack has failed until the dealer's diagnosis confirms it. Ask a dealer whether this VIN is still within GM's high-voltage battery warranty.
